Heritage Lottery Fund
Frequently asked Questions
What are you going to do with all this money?
The lottery application has drawn down £ 938,000. The money is given to Worcestershire County Council. By the time the contract has been drawn up between HLF and WCC the money won't be available until April 2003
What is the money for?
The Castlemorton Common Association were asked why stock was not a common site on the Hills and commons. They came back with the reply that it was because of dog worrying and stock straying from the commons onto the roads and into the villages.
So how do you propose to tackle this problem?
Under the Malvern Hills Act 1995 the Conservators have little powers to erect fencing and certainly would get opposition to ring fencing the commons. Therefore the only realistic way to ensure that stock are able to graze is by putting in cattlegrids at various point. A plan of the cattlegrids is available from the lead organisation -Malvern Hills AONB, Manor House, Grange road, Malvern.
What do you know about cattlegrids?
The Highways Partnership will be responsible for advertising and erecting cattle grids and also be responsible for their maintenance for the next fifty years.
What do I do if I want to object?
You will have the opportunity to object or indeed support the proposal through the normal democratic system as all cattlegrids are advertised.
What is happening with the rest of the money?
The cattle grids are costing in the region of £ 600,000. The rest of the money goes towards paying the Conservator's Shepherd for the next three years. The first two years have been paid for by English Nature another partner in the project.
Money will also go towards landscaping St Ann's Well and ten water features around the Hills.
The AONB Unit will employ a Project Officer to look into the feasibility of marketing Malvern Lamb. Also look into providing Education Packs and organising school trips. The officer will also be supervising the well work and keeping a register of commoners with common rights.
