LINK COMMON SEWAGE SYSTEM

Severn Trent are carrying out work to the sewage pipes on Link Common. So that Conservators and the public are aware of what is happening and why it is needed I have prepared an information sheet.

WHY is the work being done?

Many of the old houses in Malvern were connected up to the brick sewage system. The surface water and water from the gutters was also plugged into the sewage system. So when it rains all the rain water as well as the sewage goes into the system. The pipes can't take all this water at once so the pipes fill up. The sewage pipe across the link common is made of brick. Some of these bricks are damaged, when full they leak.

Where does all the sewage and water come from?

All the houses along Graham Road & Worcester Road come in to the link from the south. All the houses along Link top come in from the north and from the houses to the east along a pipe from Albert Road North.

What is Severn Trent doing?

Firstly they need to make a tank to take all this water and sewage hence they are building a tank at Link Top near Ivy House.Workings at Graham Road/Moorlands Road junctionThis will store the waste and slowly release the contents down a pipe to a tank at Cockshot Road. A brick tank is situated opposite our circular car park. There will be a new tank placed adjacent to this and the old tank will be filled in.

The new tank will screen the waste and separate the storm water. The storm water will go down the common in an existing pipe to exit in Meadow Drive and go into the Whiteacre Brook. The screen debris together with other sewage will go in an existing pipe to empty at the sewage works on Mill Lane.

All pipes are in a dangerous condition and the company will reline the pipes. They can do this down to Pickersleigh Road without digging up the common. They do need to dig up the common from where it crosses the Worcester Road from Albert Road North and then dig across the common to join up with the tank at Cockshot Road.

How long will this take?

The big tank at Link Top will be finished by Christmas, the whole job is due to finish in March 2004.

Why did we let them do this?

The Severn Trent served us with a statutory notice.

What about reinstatement?

I have asked that the common be reinstated to its original condition. I didn't want any concrete markers or overground obstructions. All manhole covers to be flush. We have specified the grass seed mixture. Peter Hughes is acting on our behalf. We have a bond and will receive the appropriate compensation.

I am happy to answer any questions on the scheme.
