Burning well    The Jubilee Beacon Bonfire on the Worcestershire Beacon was lit at 10pm prompt on Monday 3 June as part of a chain of bonfires across the country to mark the Golden Jubilee. Once the fire was lit John Tretheway, Chairman of the Public Relations Committee, led a rousing Three Cheers for the Queen and then the singing of the National Anthem. H M Queen lit the National Beacon at 10.45 pm. Given the fine weather, our event was spectacular and, as in years past, was seen for many miles around. The Conservators were pleased that so many people climbed the Beacon to enjoy the spectacle. Everyone agreed that it was a happy, memorable and enjoyable conclusion to Malvern's weekend of Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

The Bonfire, for health & safety reasons was not allowed to be as large as the “60 footers” of the past but nonetheless all agreed that it was suitably spectacular. You may be interested to know, that because of the Site of Special Scientific Interest status of the Worcestershire Beacon, English Nature had to be consulted and has given permission for us to hold this event whilst at the same time also advising the Conservators as to the sort of materials which should be used. Erection of the bonfire was carried out by the Conservators' staff who had been saving wood for this purpose for many weeks.

The field staff were magnificent, they started building the Bonfire at 6 am on the morning of the Celebrations. It was completed by about 11.30 am. By about 9.30 am the following morning they had completely cleared the site of all evidence of the huge fire.

Showing the flag    It was a very enjoyable night for everbody. Many brought picnics as there is no other refreshments available on the Beacon.

It was the best free entertainment to be got anywhere. There was no charge and no collections were taken.
